Quality Indicators for SCIP
The following are some of the best medical practices for several surgical procedures as outlined by the Federal Government. A best medical practice is a treatment that has been proven to provide the best results for most patients. These treatments are considered an important part of the patient's overall care.
Best practice calls for hospitals to make sure surgical patients get the following care:
Initial Antibiotic Timing:
Patients should receive an antibiotic within one (1) hour before surgery. Antibiotics are medicines used to prevent infections.
Antibiotic Selection:
Patients should receive the right antibiotic for their surgery. Different surgeries require different antibiotics, your physician should choose the antibiotic that is recommended for your surgery.
Discontinuation of Antibiotic:
Patients should have their antibiotics stopped within twenty-four (24) hours of surgery (unless it is a heart surgery).

The ultimate goal for each indicator is 100%, and the staff of Bedford Regional Medical Center are continually working toward achieving that goal.
